The Polar watch has become a staple in the fitness industry for runners, walkers, and cyclists. Because Polar heart rate monitors are superior in functioning, durability, and overall effectiveness than most competing brands, they are the most often purchased heart rate monitor for cyclists. There are over 30 different Polar models on the market right now, but the ones used for cycling are those designed to strap onto bike handlebars.
The small computers that all Polar heart rate monitors are equipped with allow cyclists to see a wide variety of feedback on their workouts. Some feedback that is often reported back includes: speed, heart rate, distance, and pacing. Many professional athletes use these monitors because they are the key to getting in effective training sessions that pay off on race day. Many amateur cyclists also use them as a way to determine how much fat they are burning and how high their heart rate is going.
There are many advanced features that can now be found on a Polar watch which greatly enhance the effectiveness of every workout for beginners as well as more advanced exercisers. For instance, there are now watches that report how many calories are being burned, monitor target heart rate zones, and which allow the user to take fitness tests. Read more...

Even though our bodily processes need oxygen, the usage of oxygen in our bodies causes oxidative harm. Free radicals are produced when our bodies employ oxygen. A free radical is a molecule that is lacking one or more electrons. This makes the molecule extremely volatile and it can cause many problems in our bodies. Antioxidants are nutrients that are found in food that are recognized to slow or even thwart the effects of oxidative impairment.
An antioxidant will come in and connect to a free radical by donating the missing electron. Most of the wholesome foods found in nature are loaded in antioxidants and including these foods in your diet can enhance your immune system and help to avoid disease such as heart disease and cancer and other problems normally associated with aging.
Some of the uppermost antioxidant foods are the berries. Blueberries, cranberries, blackberries and even grapes and cherries are all excessive in antioxidants. The ORAC or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity is how antioxidant activity in food is calculated. All berries have a high ORAC level but the food with the highest ORAC level is in point of fact the acai berry. There are a few things with a higher ORAC level including ground cinnamon and cloves but as far as genuine food the acai berry surpasses all. Read more...

The first indication many of us have that we are out of shape is when there are young children around and we can’t keep up with them. It is even more important to be trim and fit when we are older, and exercise is the best way to do that.
An elliptical trainer is my exercise of choice these days. It’s a great cardio workout without putting any strains on my joints.
It can be compared to a treadmill in that is works the same areas; but there isn’t the pressure on the knees and ankles that come with pounding the treadmill.
The workout you get from an elliptical is great, as you don’t just get the cardio benefits; you are burning calories and toning up your thighs, legs and butt in the process. As it is very low impact, you get these benefits without pounding a hard surface.
Although elliptical are in all good gyms, more and more people are purchasing them to use in the comfort of their own home. They have a choice of programs so you can adjust your machine to give yourself the best workout to suit you. Read more...

There is an eternal debate about whether or not calories ultimately control fat loss. Many wonder if the type of food you eat is more important than the amount of calories you eat. In any case, there are more powerful entities here: hormones.
You see, hormones don’t really play within the bounds of the closed calorie model. They are extremely strong substances that penetrate your cells and create change.
Thus, here is how to make sure your hormones don’t prevent you from losing weight:
1. Keep your cardiovascular system healthy: Surprisingly, an unhealthy cardiovascular system can have a negative impact on your entire hormonal system. This mainly happens when your blood pressure is too high. So make sure you exercise hard, take some aspirin and get on medication if you doctor thinks this is right.
2. Stay away from hormonal supplements: Supplements that artificially increase your levels of hormones should be avoided at all costs. In fact, if you do this, in the end your body will produce less hormones because of negative feedback loops. So make sure you all natural. Read more...

You probably know that it is important to drink adequate water. A minimum of 8 glasses of water a day is suggested. This is a number to strive for to improve your health and well being. You should aim for more if it is genuinely hot, or you are sweating a lot and working out. Getting enough water in your body will keep you from getting dehydrated.
According to WEBMD the early signs of dehydration are increased thirst, sticky saliva and dry mouth, and reduced urine output with dark yellow urine. You may also experience headache and a lack of energy. None of these sound very amusing. I know it is hard sometimes to drink that much water; particularly when sodas and coffee tempt us. However, to stay healthy and feel eager, we should strive to drink those eight glasses of water a day.
Observe your water intake to meet your minimal water intake goals. This can be as simple as a small piece of paper on the fridge, or a page in your day planner. Just make a little checkmark, or dash on the piece of paper every time you drink a glass of water. The log will help you keep track of how much water you have had in any given day. You’ll also be surprised how motivating it is to try to get those eight little checkmarks on there every day. Another idea would be to use little stickers instead. Read more...

People usually have two main reason why they run for exercise. They usually run to burn fat, and improve their cardio conditioning. Running however, impacts the body in other ways. One area usually overlooked is its impact on muscles.
Running can have either a positive or negative impact on the body depending on how you go about the process. When you run, you will want to use the proper method of running that will enhance your muscles in a positive manner.
When you run, you engage an impact every muscle group in the body. Running does not merely impact or affect the legs as some erroneously assume. So, when you make running a regular part of your daily workout regimen, you will be developing your body a significant degree. Also, the excess body fat on your frame will melt away because running has a tendency to completely shred fat like few other exercises can. This is why many runners have a ripped to shreds physique that is so desirable by so many. Read more...

Vitamins and Supplements
Cholecalciferol, or as it is better known as, vitamin D3 is well known for its positive effects on bone health. What may not be very well known is that there are other health benefits as well. Cancer prevention, reduction in the risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, and even diabetes are only a few of the health benefits associated with this vitamin.
Not too many foods contain this vitamin. You can find it in green leafy vegetables, fish and milk. If you are looking to increase your dose of vitamin D, make sure to get enough natural sunlight. Your skin absorbs ultraviolet rays and produces this vitamin within the skin.
If you are prone to cuts on your hands from work in the kitchen or the like, you can help the healing process by getting enough of this vitamin. There are many vitamin D creams available that can be placed topically onto the skin. This can also be helpful if you are looking to ease the appearance of stretch marks or acne. Read more...

Balance is imperative to good health and the way to achieve digestive health is through the introduction of microflora or probiotics to our systems. Prebiotics will increase the probiotics in your intestines and increase your ability to absorb calcium and other important minerals. This new field of nutritional research boasts promising results for the heart and the immune systems. This link between our health and our diet is a new awareness to promote well-being.
You don’t digest prebiotics they live in your intestinal tract and stimulate further beneficial bacterial growth. They keep the other bacteria healthy. They mostly derive from carbohydrate fibers called oligosaccharides which can be found in whole grains, legumes and fruit. Yogurt contains bifidobacteria that in turn has these fibers. These fibers are also known as fermentable fiber.
Supplements can be added to your foods and drinks that contain prebiotics and if you pay attention to labels you can find them already added into foods you purchase. If you like you can take them in a pill or capsule form or eat some yogurt. A probiotic cannot be broken down by the body or absorbed in the GI tract. If you have a blood sugar imbalance or are prone to stomach aches or bacterial vaginosis you can benefit from prebiotics. Read more...
